About Jeseníky Protected Landscape Area

Jeseníky Protected Landscape Area (PLA) covers over 744 square kilometers in the northeastern part of the Czech Republic, primarily within the Olomouc and Moravian-Silesian regions. The area is distinguished by the Hrubý Jeseník mountain range, which features the highest peak of Moravia, Praděd, rising to 1,491 meters. The landscape is characterized by mixed forests of spruce, beech, and fir, extensive alpine meadows, peat bogs, and unique rock formations. The region supports diverse wildlife including lynx, golden eagles, and rare alpine plants. Historic wood cottages and traditional mountain farms punctuate the landscape, reflecting centuries of human presence. Visitors enjoy a broad variety of recreational opportunities throughout the year: hiking on well-marked trails that lead to panoramic viewpoints, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and nature photography. Key landmarks include the Praděd TV Tower, the picturesque Rejvíz peat bog with its boardwalks, and the Čertovy kameny (Devil’s Rocks), large quartzite formations popular with climbers. The area is also culturally rich, with many small villages upholding strong folklore traditions and regional cuisine. The Jeseníky PLA appeals to nature lovers seeking tranquility, diverse ecosystems, and outdoor activities in one of the Czech Republic’s most significant natural areas.
